Tongariro
Lodge is known among trout anglers around the world as the next best thing
to heaven with guided fishing for brown and rainbow trout covering 30
rivers and streams and 5 lakes during a full season. Established in 1982,
the lodge has expert fishing guides who it believes are essential to ensure
visiting anglers enjoy the best fishing. It operates its own power boats
and inflatable rafts on waterways where boat fishing is allowed, and offers
a helicopter option for anglers who want to try the most remote streams.
Depending on the water and the season, everything from dry fly fishing
to light tackle trolling is available.
Part
of the Taupo system near Turangi at the southern end of Lake Taupo, the
beautiful Tongariro River is at the lodge's front door. The main lodge
building, all wood paneling and fishing memorabilia, houses the bar, guest
lounge and dining room complete with open fires in cooler months. Its
25 riverside chalets are set away from the main lodge and have their own
terrace with superb views over the river to the mountains beyond. Tongariro
Lodge has an all weather tennis court and a secluded spa pool. Its expert
staff can arrange outside activities from golf to guided hunting. The
lodge is at the foothills of Tongariro National Park and its major ski
slopes.
The
lodge has a big reputation for gourmet dining and its rates include a
4 course dinner and cooked breakfast daily. It features traditional New
Zealand cuisine and game. Meals are served in its cosy and convivial dining
room. The staff specialises in picnic hampers for lunch, which is also
available in the lodge. Guided fly and boat fishing includes all tackle
and lunch.
Tongariro
Lodge is a luxury experience despite its 4 star rating. It offers a very
high standard of personal, old-fashioned service and very comfortable
rooms. The lodge accommodates a maximum 50 guests in its 1, 2 and 3 bedroom
chalets.
