The Grand Chateau is a classic among New Zealand hotels. Built in 1929, it sits in the World Heritage listed Tongariro National Park overshadowed by the beautiful Mount Ruapehu, about 100 kilometres south of Taupo. A skier's paradise in winter, Mt Ruapehu is live volcano, and is a delight in warmer months. Activities include live volcano tours, white water rafting, top rated river kayaking, horse riding and trout fishing. It's a major walking and hiking area, home to the famous Tongariro Trek, which passes the superb Emerald Lakes. The hotel has been extensively renovated over the years but retains much of its original splendour coupled with modern in-room facilities.

The Grand Chateau is a 3.5 star property with 5 styles of accommodation, including self-contained chalets in the grounds, which can accommodate up to 4 or 6 people, and have either a kitchenette or a full kitchen. Hotel rooms range from economy rooms with showers through to standard and premium rooms sleeping 2, 3 and 4 respectively in double and single beds. Suites have a queen bed and a spa bath.

The Ruapehu Room offers well priced meals in classic surroundings. It opens for breakfast from 7 to 10am daily, dinner from 6pm to 9.30, and Sunday lunch. Fergussons Cafe and Craft Shop serves light meals and arts and crafts throughout the day. The Pihanga Cafe opposite the hotel garage opens 11.30am daily. The Ngaurohoe Lounge Bar offers magnificent views in relaxed surroundings. There is also a tavern in the village, a short walk down the road, which has live evening entertainment during the ski season. A 24-hour room service caters for guests to weary to move.
