AJ Hackett Bungy Queenstown

Departures

Departures daily from the AJ Hackett office in The Station, Corner Camp and Shotover Streets. The company offers a choice of four jump sites - Kawarau Bridge, Skippers Canyon, The Ledge and, new in 1999, The Nevis Highwire. Clients should check departure times for the jump of their choice.

Duration

Vary according to jump site and the number of participants on each excursion. Transfer time to The Ledge is only a few minutes and the whole excursion takes an hour. The drive to The Nevis Highwire by minibus and four-wheel drive takes 40 minutes each way. The Skippers Canyon excursion, which includes a long 4WD trip over rugged high country tracks, takes half a day.

Highlights

Triple bungy jumpAJ Hackett and fellow speed skier Henry Van Asch were the pioneers of modern Bungy jumping. AJ made world news in June 1987 when he jumped from the Eiffel Tower. Bungy, New Zealand slang for 'elastic strap' was based on the centuries old Pentecost jump in Vanuatu where island men leap from wooden platforms with vines tied around their ankles in a traditional ritual. The vines stopped their headlong fall inches from the ground.

Bungy jumping has become a worldwide phenomenon with about one million recorded jumps. AJ Hackett Bungy, the pioneer, accounts for almost half of them. Modern Bungy cords are made from latex rubber to withstand five times the stress exerted by the jumper. The company's oldest jumpers so far are a man aged 91 and a woman of 84.

Inclusions

Highly trained jump instructors and all equipment. Jumpers can choose a foot tie or body harness. Transfers to and from jump sites.

Kawarau Bridge

This is the original AJ Hackett jump site, 43 metres above the crystal clear waters of the Kawarau River. This is the only option where you splash into the river. Subject to some restrictions, tandem jumps are available.

Skippers Canyon

Skippers Canyon bungyThis is a half day excursion in which getting there is almost as exciting as the jump itself. Participants travel deep into the historic wilderness in a purpose built four wheel drive vehicle over a narrow, cliff hugging track. You jump 71 metres from a bridge above the raging Shotover River below.

The Ledge

The Ledge is a specially built platform jutting out from a cliff face 400 metres above Queenstown with magnificent views of Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables mountain range. There is a Mild Side and a Wild Side to this jump, and toys like bicycles or snow boards to jump with for those who like a little extra. This jump of 47 metres can be done day or night, using a foot tie or harness.

The Nevis Highwire

Suspended above the Nevis River, this is the ultimate leap of faith, 134 metres (440 feet) above the river. You freefall for eight seconds. A marvel of modern engineering, the jump platform is suspended by wires. It was opened in mid 1999.

Special Conditions

Children under 10 are not accepted. Jumpers must weight at least 35 kilograms to jump at The Ledge and Kararau, 45 kg at The Nevis Highwire. There is no upper age limit. AJ Hackett holds the first New Zealand Standard certificate issued for quality and safety.
